چکیده

This paper reports results related to the phenomenon referred to as a “glottal squeak” (coined by [1]). At present, nothing is known about the conditioning and the articulation of this feature of speech. Our qualitative acoustic analyses of the conditioning of squeaks (their frequency of occurrence, duration, and f0) found in Aberystwyth English and Manchester English suggest that squeaking may be a result of intrinsically tense vocal fold state associated with thyroarytenoid (TA) muscle recruitment [2] required for epilaryngeal constriction and vocal-ventricular fold contact (VVFC) needed to produce glottalisation [3]. In this interpretation, we hypothesise that squeaks occasionally occur during constriction disengagement: at the point when VVFC suddenly releases but the TAs have not yet fully relaxed. Extralinguistic conditioning identified in this study corroborates findings reported by [1]: females are more prone to squeaking and the phenomenon is individual-dependent.

Phase Transitions in a Repetitive Speech Task as Gestural Recomposition

This paper examines glottal movement data in rate-controlled repetitions of CV (onset consonant + vowel) and VC (vowel + coda consonant) structures. It replicates Tuller & Kelso’s (1991) observation of rate-induced phase transitions in glottal behavior. Specifically, for voiceless consonants peak glottal opening for CV’s are similar at fast and slow rates. The timing for VC’s at slow rates diff...

Adding Glottal Source Information to Intra-Lingual Voice Conversion

This paper studies the inclusion of glottal source characteristics in voice conversion (VC) systems. We use source/filter decomposition to parametrize the vocal tract using LSF, the glottal source using the LF model, and the aspiration noise using amplitude-modulated high-pass filtered AWGN noise. To evaluate the impact of this new parametrization in VC, we use a reference conversion system tha...

The linear transformation of LF glottal waveforms for voice conversion

Most Voice Conversion (VC) systems exploit source-filter decomposition based on linear prediction (LP) to transform spectral envelopes, incurring as a result various issues related to the oversimplification of the LP voice source model. Whilst residual prediction methods can mitigate this problem, they cannot be used to modify voice source quality. In this paper, a system which employs linear t...

Population-Specific Use of the Same Tool-Assisted Alarm Call between Two Wild Orangutan Populations (Pongopygmaeus wurmbii) Indicates Functional Arbitrariness

Arbitrariness is an elementary feature of human language, yet seldom an object of comparative inquiry. While arbitrary signals for the same function are relatively frequent between animal populations across taxa, the same signal with arbitrary functions is rare and it remains unknown whether, in parallel with human speech, it may involve call production in animals. To investigate this question,...

Steady Flow Through Modeled Glottal Constriction

The airflow in the modeled glottal constriction was simulated by the solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations for laminar flow, and the corresponding Reynolds equations for turbulent flow in generalized, nonorthogonal coordinates using a numerical method. A two-dimensional model of laryngeal flow is considered and aerodynamic properties are calculated for both laminar and turbulent steady flows...
